Lessons Learned

  • Even when jobs are safe and enriching, they can take time from schoolwork and extracurricular activities. Teens with demanding jobs may lose focus on homework or fall asleep in class.
  • Experts recommend high school sophomores work no more than 10 hours a week. Juniors and seniors can usually handle 15.
  • Also, budgeting lessons are lost when a teen blows a paycheck while parents continue to provide necessities. Encourage teens to put part of their paycheck toward a long-term goal, such as a car.
