Know the Work Rules

Know the rules, because not all employers do. Federal regulations (some states have stricter rules) limit work by age and occupation. The rules do not apply to youngsters working for their parents on family farms.

  • Teens ages 14-15 may work 7:00 am—7:00 pm, and from June 1 through Labor Day, 7:00 am—9:00 pm. They can work no more than 3 hours on school days or 18 hours during school weeks, 8 hours on non-school days and 40 hours in non-school weeks.
  • Teens 16-17 can work unlimited hours.
  • Certain hazardous occupations are off-limits until age 18. Among them are driving or being an outside helper on a motor vehicle; operating power-driven bread or meat-slicing machines; wrecking, roofing or excavation.
