New Baby Checklist

A new family member not only dictates a different lifestyle, but also generates new expenses. Start rethinking your budget now and know what other business you have to take care of so you’re ready when the big day arrives.

  • Check into maternity and paternity leave benefits with your employer. Often, you can negotiate your terms, depending on the situation. The sooner you mention your pregnancy, the better
  • Review health insurance. Does it cover prenatal, labor and delivery fees?
  • Get your new baby a Social Security Number, so you can claim the child as a dependent on your taxes and so you can open accounts in his or her name. Most hospitals supply the forms, but you can also get it online
  • Add your baby to your health and life insurance policies. Do this within 30 days of your baby’s birth and beneficiary coverage is effective immediately
  • Returning to work? Review childcare options. Nanny? Daycare?
  • Open a savings account. Your baby will thank you
